Tiny Lizard discovered in a Vizag Sanctuary

Not a snake but limbless lizard, an evolutionary proof!

17.6.23 Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh: An unique tiny lizard, known as Barkudia limbless skink (Barkudia melanosticta) was discovered in Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary near Visakhapatnam. the discovery acquires important evidence in evolution, as it looks like a snake but possesses features of a lizard without limbs

According to the Project Scientist of the sanctuary, Yagnapathy Adari, the finding marks a significant milestone making the sanctuary’s importance as a biodiversity hotspot. This small reptile with its unique limbless body and extraordinary adaptations was elusive so far. Believed to be endemic to this region, this remarkable discovery provides invaluable insights into the species’ behavior, habitat preferences, and overall ecological role.

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, with its rich variety of flora and fauna, has always been a source of fascination for researchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Spanning over 70 sq.km, the sanctuary boasts diverse ecosystems that provide a haven for numerous endangered and endemic species. This finding underscores the importance of preserving such fragile ecosystems. The discovery of the limbless skink is the result of lots of fieldwork conducted by Yagnapathy Adari with the support of Anant Shankar, IFS, DFO Visakhapatnam. The Barkudia limbless skink with its brownish elongated body and absence of limbs, represents a unique adaptation to its environment. Conservation efforts will include intensified monitoring, habitat preservation, and collaboration with local communities to raise awareness about the importance of conserving this rare and extraordinary reptile. It is important to study the evolutionary dynamics and ecological interactions within the region, says Yagnapathy, adding that the species needs in-depth study due to its fossil type. Conservation initiatives are needed to safeguard such fragile ecosystems within Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary in the Eastern Ghat region.
