Residents voice reaches authorities!

It was a big solace for residents, who took the unauthorised garbage dumping and burning cases with local authorities that atlast the authroities rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Green Circle, Yelahanka Unit an NGO working for environment took up the isue of garbage burning and dumping  in twitter and media. At a time when several incidents of unauthorised garbage dumping and plastic burnings were reported from Yelahanka outskirts in North Bangalore. Kumar Kalyandurg, a member of Green Circle and resident of Vajram Tiara apartment Avalahalli, says, ‘We have taken up the matter with Panchayat Development Office in Singanayakkanhalli. PDO Damodhar admitted the issue and wanted residents to support him in jointly addressing the persistent issue of garbage clearance’.  Rashmi Kulkarni, a resident of Prestige Royale gardens said, ‘we have 1600 flats in our apartment and pay house tax of about 2 crores every year and so we deserve a better treatment’. Vasanth added ‘Surprisingly we have seen that garbage is burnt next to our apartment. Inside our apartment, we segregate waste at source and dispose on daily basis through BBMP trucks, but our outside areas are dirty’

Resident stressed the need for clearing the trash on daily basis, because of raising garbage burning issues, he assured to clear the trash, though he quoted staff shortage and budget as reasons. ‘I am sure garbage is not picked up at most places. My eyes were burning and I was feeling suffocated by fumes from fire by burning garbage when I walked yesterday near Fedora apartment. We need to escalate the complaints to Pollution Control board and health authorities’ says a resident. ‘Responding if and when we call has no meaning’, fumes Dr Ramalaxmi, adding ‘They need to do regular garbage collection, big dust bins to contain garbage. Will they intervene only when someone lights a fire?’.  A recent case of garbage burning was brought to his notice promptly. PDO sent a staff who inundated the fire without wasting time. Interestingly the burning took place in an unauthorized dump where a display board in Kannada indicates a penalty of Rs 1000 for dumpers.

Selvarajan, Founder of Green Circle said, “we, the like minded residents are managing a whatsapp group in which there are about 300 residents from all local apartments. On day today basis, they bring the incidents of dumping and burning to the notice of authorities. We take up the cases through Sahaya App of BBMP if it is withing their jurisdiction, otherwise, we work in tandem with Panchayat office to address the issue’ He added ‘Recently we met Panchayat In future we are going to do the voluntary work along with authorities to create awareness about littering and burning”
