AN EXPERIANCE SHARING .... ON WORLD RECYCLING DAY 18.3.2023
Come rainy season, everyone grumbles about plastic clogging the drains and causing floods. Is plastic such an Evil becomes everyone’s question mark that even it could not be eliminated completely. Perhaps that’s why even the Government bans Single Use Plastics (SUP) only. Whether we like or not, plastic in fact has become an integral part of our lives, dawn to dusk. That electric line which supplies power to fill your houses with light and air, chillness or warmth, is covered with plastic, because plastic is a poor conductor of electricity. Packaging of baby food to life saving drugs, no industry can run without the various avtars of plastic. So it is our responsibility to use it sparingly and recycle it properly.
In my housing society, a group of well informed 'Plastic Crusaders' make sure that all sorts of plastic waste is recycled/upcycled. In this venture, we have a tie up with Bisleri and their 'Bottles for Change' initiative. They send a truck every fortnight which picks up the plastic waste, and then it is delivered to the 'recycler' who is appointed by Bisleri. There these plastic waste is classified, cleaned, processed and converted into granules. These granules are further made into solid blocks or rayon threads. These are then converted into all- weather benches, paver blocks, shopping bags, ladies wallets, shoulder bags, pens etc. We, as residents do our bit by storing the empty tooth paste tubes, water bottles, hangers, Combs, pens, and even chocolate wraps. The Segregation actually generates employment opportunity at the housekeeping level. Recycling provides business opportunities. On the whole, if handled and disposed properly, plastic may not pose a formidable threat to environment.
(The article is by Mrs M Prasad, Lakehomes, Powai Mumbai, The views expressed in the article are that of the author, and South Express feels that such initiatives by Bisleri must reach out to other cities and towns also, that too when plastics cannot be completely eliminated, the best alternative is to recycle. Greetings on WORLD RECYCLING DAY)
